Baby Names

Sunday, March 18, 2007

Now that we are through the first 20 weeks of the pregnancy discussion has turned to the name for the little girl that we are having.

I always thought that baby naming was ment to be a fun process but it is proving more stressful than I would have thought with everyone having an opionin and going round in circles.

On thing is agreed so far is that the name will be arabic and it will need to be pronoucable to English folks also. Myself and Hajer made lists of names we liked and apparently all mine where old lady names which made her laugh. Whilst Hajer seems to like Sarah which aparently cuts both ways however I know two other babies called Sarah in Tunisia already and its a popular name in the UK also. I thought that we had reached a comprimise with Zahara (Rose) but apparently that is an old ladies name also.

SO far I like:

Zahara
Zahira
Yasmine
Sabrine (even though water brand in Tunisia)

Hajer likes

Sarah
Lubna
Nadia

Apparently the above are either bad or old fashioned can anyone else think of any nice ones?

My sis-in-law is called Sonia, works in many languages... I'm sure Hajer knows this way better than me, but I have a link to a list of Arabic names and their meanings which I'll gladly send you if you want.

I have a daughter Sabrine, this name was popular in Tunisia in 1991 when she was born. Another of my daughters is called Zarina and 2 more have second names of Cherine and Yasmine (Yasmine is not old fashioned, it is actually very popular at the moment!)
Other 'In' names are Maya or Maysa, Aya and Ines.

Kris/Hajer,

I've read the romantic story on UKTI website who helped set up this site so congrats, I'll do my best to promote it to people I know.
The "baby names" blog is quiet funnny and I can relate to it completely as I'm Tunisian and my husband is English, I imagine one day we'll have your dilemma. We will choose an international name though as they will go to school in London where they will be brought up so I would not give them a name that would be a reason for cruel kids to pick on them. My friend named her daughter Maya and I heard in Tunisia the name Ryan is being used, they're both nice!?

Anyway congrats and good luck to both of you. My husband finds Tunisian very hard to learn! not sure if I can get hold of CDs that can teach you the Tunisian dialect as opposed to standard useless Arabic unless you're a journalist that is! any tips?
